SEATTLE, Washington — A gathering of Kenyans in the Seattle area provided an opportunity for members of the diaspora to engage visiting Kenyan leaders on issues ranging from participation in the 2027 General Election to investment protection and the future leadership of Nairobi.

KASS MTV USA spoke with Embakasi North MP James Mwangi Gakuya, popularly known as Bazenga, Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru Mejjadonk, and a representative of the Kenyan community in the Pacific Northwest.

The conversations took place alongside a community gathering held in memory of Rose Karimi Isaac, bringing together members of the Kenyan diaspora and visiting leaders.

Diaspora Voting Moves Toward 2027

One of the key issues raised during the conversations was the political participation of Kenyans living outside the country.

The question is particularly significant as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.

Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says the Constitution guarantees political rights to Kenyan citizens living abroad and that diaspora participation has progressively expanded since its introduction in 2013.

The IEBC’s 2025–2027 Election Operations Plan outlines plans to expand diaspora participation by increasing the number of participating countries, establishing additional registration centres and polling stations, and registering more Kenyans living abroad.

The commission has also indicated that diaspora voter registration for the 2027 General Election is planned for January 2027, subject to budget availability.

For Kenyan communities across the United States, the developments have renewed attention on how many citizens abroad will be able to participate and how the process will be implemented.

Diaspora Investment: Beyond Remittances

The discussions also examined the economic relationship between Kenya and its citizens abroad.

For many diaspora families, engagement with Kenya extends beyond sending remittances. Kenyans living overseas invest in land, construct homes, support businesses and finance long-term family projects.

KASS MTV USA raised questions about how such investments can be better protected and what measures political leaders envision to strengthen confidence among Kenyans investing from abroad.

The conversation reflected a broader issue within diaspora communities: participation in Kenya’s future is not only political but also economic.

For Kenyans living overseas, confidence in institutions, accountability and the protection of investments can influence decisions about whether and how much to invest back home.

Gakuya Discusses Kenya’s Political Direction

During the conversation, Gakuya also addressed Kenya’s evolving political environment ahead of the 2027 elections.

He discussed his perspective on emerging political alliances and coalition-building as political actors position themselves ahead of the next General Election.

Those comments represent Gakuya’s political assessment and do not constitute an established outcome of the 2027 election.

According to the IEBC, Kenya’s next General Election is scheduled for August 10, 2027.

The National Assembly currently lists Gakuya as the elected representative for Embakasi North, while parliamentary records list Mejjadonk as the elected representative for Embakasi Central.

Nairobi’s Leadership and Future

Another focus of the conversation with Gakuya was the future of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital and one of the country’s most important political and economic centres.

Gakuya discussed his political vision for the city and issues he believes should shape its leadership, including service delivery and the management of a rapidly growing capital.

For Kenyans in the diaspora who own businesses, property or maintain family ties in Nairobi, developments within Nairobi County can have consequences that extend well beyond the country’s borders.

Decisions concerning infrastructure, public services, planning and governance can affect families and investments connected to Nairobi from abroad.

Pacific Northwest Diaspora Seeks Greater Engagement

The Seattle-area conversations also highlighted the growing expectation among Kenyan diaspora communities that engagement with national leaders should extend beyond ceremonial visits.

Voting rights, investment protection, accountability and access to government remain significant issues for Kenyans living abroad.

The IEBC’s election plan recognises the importance of diaspora engagement and calls for collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs and diaspora associations as preparations for the 2027 election continue.

Looking Ahead to 2027

With Kenya’s next General Election scheduled for August 2027, questions surrounding diaspora participation, political alliances, investment and Nairobi’s governance are likely to remain part of the national conversation.

For Kenyans living in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere in the diaspora, the Seattle gathering offered a reminder that their connection to Kenya extends across both political and economic spheres.
