Tanzania’s Vice President Resigns Less Than a Year Into Office

DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzania’s Vice President Emmanuel John Nchimbi is stepping down from office less than a year after taking up the position, in a surprise political development that has raised questions about the country’s leadership.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has accepted Nchimbi’s resignation, according to a government spokesperson. No reason was given for the decision.

Nchimbi will officially leave office on September 4, having served as vice president since November last year.

The government said constitutional procedures to appoint a new vice president will now begin.

“Constitutional procedures to appoint another vice president of the United Republic of Tanzania will be undertaken,” the government said in a statement.

Before becoming vice president, Nchimbi served as secretary-general of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.

Remarks on New Constitution Sparked Criticism

Nchimbi had recently come under criticism from some members of the ruling party following comments he made at an event organized by a rights group.

Last month, he said he would encourage Tanzanians to push for a new constitution, arguing that the country’s legal framework should promote not only economic development but also dignity and human rights.

His remarks reportedly drew concern from some within CCM, who viewed them as unnecessary.

Political Tensions After Tanzania’s Election

Nchimbi’s resignation comes less than a year after President Samia Suluhu Hassan won Tanzania’s presidential election with nearly 98% of the vote.

The election was heavily criticized by opposition groups and observers following the exclusion of prominent opposition candidates.

The disputed election was followed by deadly unrest across the country.

A government-appointed inquiry panel later reported that at least 518 people were killed during the violence.

The resignation now leaves the government preparing for the appointment of a new vice president at a time when Tanzania continues to face scrutiny over political reforms, constitutional change and the treatment of opposition groups.

The government has not indicated who could replace Nchimbi.

KASSM TV USA will continue to monitor developments surrounding Tanzania’s political leadership and the appointment of the country’s next vice president.
