Kenyan Running Star Caren Chelagat Banned for Four Years Over Anti-Doping Violation
NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenyan road runner Caren Chelagat has been handed a four-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after an anti-doping rule violation involving a prohibited substance.
The AIU said Chelagat provided an in-competition urine sample on May 3, 2026, while competing at the Durban International Marathon in South Africa.
The sample was subsequently analysed at a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory in Doha, which reported an adverse analytical finding on July 7, 2026.
According to the AIU, the test detected exogenous 19-Norandrosterone, a metabolite associated with nandrolone.
The substance is classified under the 2026 WADA Prohibited List as a prohibited non-specified substance.
Chelagat Denied Knowingly Using Banned Substance
Chelagat told representatives of the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) that she had never knowingly used a prohibited substance.
According to the AIU, the athlete said the adverse finding could have been linked to medical treatment she received at a medical facility several days before competing in Durban.
She indicated that she would check her medical records and provide documentation supporting her explanation.
However, the AIU said Chelagat did not provide the medical records within the required process.
The athlete also did not request analysis of her B sample within the stipulated deadline and failed to respond to the formal anti-doping allegations within the required period.
As a result, the AIU deemed her to have admitted the anti-doping rule violations and accepted the proposed consequences under its rules.
Four-Year Suspension Takes Effect
The four-year period of ineligibility began on July 17, 2026, the date on which Chelagat was provisionally suspended.
The AIU said the provisional suspension notice informed the athlete of her right to request B-sample analysis and gave her until July 24 to submit a detailed written explanation regarding the adverse analytical finding.
With the deadlines passing without the required action, the AIU proceeded with the sanction.
The case represents Chelagat’s first anti-doping rule violation, according to the AIU.
Chelagat’s Results Disqualified
In addition to the four-year ban, the AIU has ordered the disqualification of Chelagat’s results from May 3, 2026, onward.
The ruling means she must forfeit any titles, awards, medals, points, prizes and appearance money obtained from competitions covered by the disqualification period.
The decision could therefore affect both her competitive record and any financial rewards associated with results achieved after the date of the violation.
Athlete Has Right to Appeal
Despite the ruling, the decision is not necessarily the final stage of the case.
Chelagat, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) have the right to appeal the AIU decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Any appeal could provide an opportunity for the case and the circumstances surrounding the adverse analytical finding to be reviewed.
Who Is Caren Chelagat?
Caren Chelagat is a Kenyan long-distance runner who has competed primarily in road races, marathons and 10-kilometre events.
Her marathon personal best is 2:40:40, recorded on June 26, 2022.
She has competed in several road-running events listed in the World Athletics database.
In February 2025, Chelagat finished third in the women’s 21-kilometre race at the Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) Marathon in Butere, Kakamega, recording a time of 1:23:53.
Her international athletics profile identifies her as a Kenyan road-running specialist.
Another Doping Challenge for Kenyan Athletics
The case adds to the continuing scrutiny facing Kenyan athletics as international anti-doping authorities intensify efforts to combat the use of prohibited substances in the sport.
Kenya remains one of the world’s leading distance-running nations, producing elite athletes who compete successfully at major international marathons and championships.
For Chelagat, the four-year suspension represents a major setback to her athletics career. Her next step could be an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if she chooses to challenge the AIU ruling.
