Elon Musk Pledges SpaceX Shares to Every Child in America
By KASSMTV News | October 19, 2026
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States one share in his aerospace company, SpaceX, in 2027, in what could become one of the largest personal share giveaways in history.
Musk made the announcement on Monday through a post on X, formerly Twitter, saying: “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.”
The announcement has drawn attention to the growing debate over how wealthy technology leaders can distribute their fortunes and help the public benefit from the economic opportunities created by artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
SpaceX Giveaway Could Be Worth More Than $10 Billion
The proposed giveaway could be worth approximately $10.5 billion based on SpaceX’s reported share price at the end of the previous trading week.
There are roughly 72 million to 73 million children under the age of 18 in the United States. Giving each child one share would therefore represent a substantial transfer of wealth, although the final value would depend on the share price when the distribution takes place.
Musk has not yet explained how the shares would be distributed, which children would qualify, or whether the shares would be placed in investment accounts managed by parents or guardians.
The billionaire also did not provide a specific date for the proposed distribution beyond saying it would happen next year.
Announcement Follows Anthropic’s Public Benefit Plan
Musk’s pledge came shortly after artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced plans to commit at least 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund.
The fund is intended to support initiatives that benefit society, including charitable projects and efforts to address the potential economic consequences of artificial intelligence.
Responding to the announcement, Musk argued that shares should be distributed directly to members of the public rather than channelled through a dedicated fund.
“This is what I will be doing,” he wrote, before announcing his plan to give SpaceX shares to American children.
The exchange highlights differing approaches among technology companies to sharing the financial benefits of their businesses with the wider public.
What Is SpaceX and Why Does It Matter?
Founded by Musk, SpaceX has become a major player in the global space industry through its rocket launches, reusable launch vehicles and Starlink satellite internet service.
The company is also pursuing ambitious projects involving its Starship launch system, with long-term plans linked to lunar exploration and human missions to Mars.
SpaceX’s financial value has grown significantly as investors place bets on its space technology, satellite communications and artificial intelligence ambitions.
Musk’s proposed donation would transfer a portion of his personal holdings to younger Americans, potentially giving millions of children a direct financial interest in the company’s future performance.
Questions Remain Over How Children Will Receive the Shares
Despite the headline-making pledge, several important details remain unresolved.
These include how eligibility will be determined, how the shares will be held for children who are too young to manage investments, whether restrictions will apply to selling the shares, and how any tax obligations will be handled.
The value of a share could also rise or fall over time, meaning the proposed gift would not guarantee a fixed financial return for every child.
The announcement comes amid wider efforts in the United States to encourage long-term investment for children, including the introduction of tax-advantaged investment accounts for eligible young Americans.
For now, Musk’s statement represents a pledge rather than a completed distribution. Further details from Musk or SpaceX are expected to be necessary before the plan’s full scope becomes clear.
KASSMTV News will continue following developments surrounding Musk’s proposed giveaway and the growing conversation about wealth, technology and the future of public investment.
