A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a violent incident in the cockpit left members of the crew injured and sent the Boeing 737 into a rapid descent.
Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport on September 30, was diverted to Tabuk Airport, where it landed safely.
Flydubai confirmed that an incident occurred during the flight and said the aircraft was brought under control by members of its crew who were travelling on board. The airline said all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for.
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority separately described the incident as a security incident and said several crew members were injured and taken to hospital in Saudi Arabia. Investigators are examining the operational and security circumstances surrounding the incident.
Captain Praised After Attack
Israeli officials and international media have reported that the incident began when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, inside the cockpit.
According to Reuters, Machchhar was stabbed during the confrontation but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene. Two other Flydubai pilots who were travelling on the aircraft then helped regain control of the flight and land it safely in Tabuk.
Machchhar has since been praised by political leaders for his actions during the emergency.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the injured captain after the incident and praised his courage and quick thinking. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also described Machchhar as a hero after the aircraft was diverted safely.
Machchhar later recounted the incident to Modi from his hospital bed in Abu Dhabi, saying he managed to open the cockpit door after being attacked, enabling passengers and crew to intervene.
Aircraft Plunged Thousands of Feet
Flight-tracking data shows that FZ1073 initially climbed to around 34,000 feet after leaving Dubai.
During the incident, however, the aircraft experienced dramatic changes in altitude.
According to Reuters and flight-tracking data, the aircraft descended by almost 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. The aircraft also transmitted emergency transponder codes, including 7700, indicating a general emergency, and 7500, associated with unlawful interference.
Passengers described the sudden descent as severe turbulence before it became clear that something more serious was happening inside the aircraft.
Despite the rapidly changing situation, the aircraft was eventually stabilised and diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely.
Passengers Helped Secure the Cockpit
Reports from passengers indicate that several people became involved after the cockpit door was opened.
Reuters reported that passengers, including Israeli traveller Yaniv Hayun, helped restrain the alleged attacker during the confrontation.
The intervention allowed other qualified pilots aboard the aircraft to assist with flying the plane and bringing it safely to the Saudi airport.
Passengers were subsequently transported onward to Tel Aviv on replacement Flydubai aircraft.
Motive Remains Under Investigation
While Israeli officials have publicly described the incident as an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft, authorities have not yet established a final motive.
The UAE has opened a formal investigation into the incident.
UAE Attorney-General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi ordered a specialised Public Prosecution team to investigate the circumstances, causes and motives surrounding the incident.
Investigators are also examining whether the incident had any connection to terrorist activity or whether there was any prior planning or direction.
The UAE authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and rely on information released by official sources until the investigation is completed.
The distinction is important: the investigation is ongoing, and no final conclusion about the motive has been announced.
Questions Over Aviation Security
The incident has renewed discussion about aviation security and the challenge posed by threats originating from inside the cockpit.
Modern cockpit doors and security procedures were largely developed to prevent unauthorised people from gaining access to the flight deck. An alleged attack involving an authorised member of the flight crew presents a very different security challenge.
Aviation analysts have subsequently raised questions about pilot screening, crew security procedures and how airlines can respond when the potential threat comes from within the cockpit itself.
The case could therefore become an important reference point in discussions about how airlines balance strict cockpit access controls with emergency procedures for situations involving crew members.
Investigation Continues
Flydubai has said it is cooperating with the authorities investigating the incident.
The airline’s initial statement confirmed that Flight FZ1073 experienced an incident while travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv before landing safely in Tabuk.
