US Envoy Nominee Rules Out Backing Candidate in Kenya’s 2027 Election

U.S. Ambassador nominee to Kenya Henry Wooster says Washington will not back any candidate or political party in Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
Speaking before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday, September 24, Wooster said the United States would instead focus on stability and a peaceful electoral process.
“Our watchword, the U.S. watchword for August 2027, when the elections are scheduled to take place, is stability,” Wooster said.
He added: “We are not picking sides in the election, A or B or any other party. What we are looking for is stability.”
Focus on Kenya-US Relations
Wooster is President Donald Trump’s nominee to become the next U.S. ambassador to Kenya. His nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
If confirmed, he said he would also seek to strengthen U.S.-Kenya diplomatic and security cooperation.
The nomination comes as political activity increases ahead of Kenya’s August 2027 election, with politicians stepping up efforts to build support both in Kenya and among the diaspora.
President William Ruto has engaged Kenyans in the United States during his September visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
Other political figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have also held meetings with Kenyans living in the U.S.
Election Stability
Wooster said the U.S. would closely monitor developments surrounding the 2027 election but would not determine which candidate or party should emerge victorious.
His comments come as Kenya prepares for another national election, with political parties and prospective candidates already positioning themselves ahead of the polls.
Wooster would succeed Meg Whitman, who resigned as U.S. ambassador to Kenya in 2024, if his nomination is confirmed by the Senate.
