The world’s cinema community is converging on Zurich as the 22nd Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) transforms Switzerland’s largest city into an international hub for film, creativity and cultural exchange.
Running from September 24 to October 4, 2026, the festival is showcasing 133 films, including 46 world and European premieres and 21 Swiss productions. Organisers expect around 500 filmmakers to take part in the 11-day event.
“Dream Big” Takes Center Stage
This year’s festival is built around the theme “Dream Big,” highlighting ambitious ideas, inspiring characters and filmmakers willing to push creative boundaries.
The festival’s international guest programme features a wide range of established stars and filmmakers, including Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Tom Hiddleston, Willem Dafoe, Olivia Colman, Jesse Eisenberg, John Turturro, Anna Kendrick, Alexander Skarsgård, Richard Linklater and Danny Boyle, among others.
But beyond the star power and red-carpet premieres, ZFF is also providing a platform for emerging filmmakers and exploring some of the major issues shaping the future of the creative industry.
Emerging Filmmakers Compete for the Golden Eye

Two of the festival’s main competitions—the Feature Film Competition and Documentary Film Competition—focus on directors at the early stages of their careers.
Each competition features 14 films, with filmmakers presenting their first, second or third directorial works.
The winners of the prestigious Golden Eye awards will receive CHF 25,000 in prize money in each competition.
The format gives audiences an opportunity to discover new filmmaking voices while providing emerging directors with an international platform alongside established names.
Artificial Intelligence Meets Cinema
One of the most relevant themes at this year’s festival is the rapidly changing relationship between artificial intelligence, technology and storytelling.
ZFF has dedicated part of its programme to #artificialintelligence, examining how technological developments are influencing society, politics and creative expression.
Among the featured productions is Alex Gibney’s documentary MUSK, which explores Elon Musk’s ideas and their influence on society.
Another production, TECHPLOMACY, examines the role of technology in government and diplomacy through the story of Denmark’s first technology ambassador and the relationship between governments, technology companies and democratic institutions.
For broadcasters, filmmakers and digital media organisations, the conversation extends beyond the cinema screen.
AI is increasingly becoming part of film production, editing, distribution and audience discovery. Film festivals such as ZFF are therefore becoming important spaces for examining how technology could reshape the global creative and media industries.
New Voices Alongside Established Talent
ZFF continues to combine emerging talent with some of the biggest names in international cinema.
While its competitions focus on filmmakers in the early stages of their careers, the festival’s Gala Premieres and other sections showcase highly anticipated international productions.
The festival’s Now/Future section also explores ecological, social and economic sustainability, reflecting the growing role of cinema in addressing issues beyond traditional entertainment.
Zurich Becomes a Global Storytelling Hub
The Zurich Film Festival’s 2026 programme highlights the increasingly interconnected nature of the global entertainment industry.
Film, television, technology, culture and digital media are converging at a time when audiences are changing how they discover, consume and interact with stories.
For KASS MTV USA, ZFF offers a valuable window into these developments—not only through the films and personalities appearing at the festival, but also through the filmmakers, technologies and ideas shaping the next generation of global entertainment.
The 22nd Zurich Film Festival runs through October 4, 2026.
KASS MTV USA will continue following developments from ZFF 2026 as part of its expanding international film, broadcasting and entertainment coverage.
